Troubleshoot unexpected shipping costs as a buyer

If your shipping charge seems higher than expected, there are a few common reasons this can happen. Here’s how to check what’s going on and what it means for your order.

On this page:

Tip: To see your shipping charge for an item, open your receipt in the app or on the website. How to view your receipt.

Your order didn’t bundle as expected

If you bought multiple items from the same seller but were charged shipping more than once, your order may not have bundled into a single shipment.

Smart Bundling™ automatically groups your purchases from the same seller to get you the lowest possible shipping rate. Most of the time, that means your items ship together in one package.

However, there are cases where Smart Bundling™ or the seller’s custom settings can cause multiple shipments:

  • Seller bundle limits or overrides: Sellers can create custom shipping profiles and set maximum bundle limits that stop items from combining after a certain point.

  • Intentional Smart Bundling™ splits: In some cases, our system will separate a large or heavy order into smaller boxes if that lowers the total shipping costs.

  • Different sales channels: Purchases from a live show and the marketplace can’t be bundled together.

Each shipment will have its own label and charge that reflects the cost to ship the item(s) in that package.

Tip: You can check which items shipped together or separately by viewing your orders under ActivityPurchases.

You were charged for postage due

If you get a notice for postage due, it means the carrier found that the package weighed more or was larger than declared on the shipping label. This usually happens because of an error in the seller’s shipping setup.

Don't worry—Whatnot will reimburse you for the postage due.

What to do:

  1. Gather proof of the charge (photo of the postage due notice or receipt)
  2. Contact support to get help with this order and attach your proof
  3. Once confirmed, we’ll reimburse you for the extra charge

Note: Don’t refuse the package. It can take up to two weeks to reach the seller and may delay reimbursement for postage due.

You were charged twice for shipping

If you see duplicate shipping charges on a single package, that’s not expected. Take a screenshot showing both charges and contact Support for review.

We’ll confirm and help fix the issue.

You were charged custom, duties, or import fees

If your order shipped internationally, these fees come from your country’s customs agency, not Whatnot or the seller.

They’re standard charges for importing goods and are the buyer’s responsibility. If you refuse to pay them, the order won’t qualify for a refund.
