With Direct Messaging, or DMs, you have the ability to communicate directly with other Whatnot users, whether you want to help directly mediate or resolve a customer support issue, or you simply want to chat 1:1 with another member of the community! 

Remember to follow the Community Guidelines 

Do not exchange contact info or encourage other users to buy, sell, or pay outside of Whatnot. This affects our ability to prevent fraud, protect Whatnot users, and is a violation of our Community Guidelines

We will not be able to offer support for any transactions made outside of the Whatnot platform, and participating in or encouraging such transactions may result in a suspension or ban.  We regularly monitor messages to protect users and detect fraud and policy violations.

If another user or buyer is encouraging you to sell or accept payment outside of the platform, please report it so that we can investigate.  

Additionally, do not send unsolicited links to your business or show to users through direct messages, we consider this spam. Spam is a violation of our Community Guidelines.

How to start a Direct Message on Mobile:

1. Tap the Activity icon at the bottom of your home then select the "Messages" tab to initiate a Direct Message or view unread messages. If you aren’t able to see Direct Messages in the app, head to the App Store and update to the latest version of Whatnot. 


2. Tap the compose button in the top right corner and type out the username of the user you want to message. You can also create group messages with up to 20 users.

3. You can also initiate a message with a user from your profile by following these steps:

  1. Open the app and navigate to your profile by selecting the profile icon on the bottom right of the screen.
  2. Tap the sidebar menu on the top right of the screen (2 lines).
  3. Scroll down to the "Selling" section and tap "Orders".
  4. Tap on the relevant order 
  5. Tap on “Start a chat”

How to start a Direct Message on the Web:

1. Visit and sign into your account

2. Click on the "Messages" option to the left of "Lives" at the top of the page


3. Click on "New Message" and type in the username of the user in the "To:" field to send them a Direct Message!


You can also access this page from your Seller Hub on the web by following these steps:

1. Click on your profile and navigate to the Seller Hub: My Shipments

2. Select the show the user purchased an item from by using the drop-down menu under "Shipments"

3. Click on the username of the person you would like to message. This will open a new tab for your direct messages. You can also view any unread messages you have after clicking their username.



Important things to know:

  • You can send a Direct Message to any user on Whatnot who is opted into Direct Messaging, and who you have not blocked/been blocked by.
  • If a user you would like to message has not "opted in" to Direct Messaging, you will not be able to message them.
  • You can send group Direct Messages to up to 20 users.
  • You always have the option to “opt out” of sending and receiving Direct Messages through your Whatnot profile settings by following these steps: 
  1. Visit your profile on the Whatnot app or
  2. Navigate to Settings (Sidebar menu in the top right-hand corner of the app)
  3. Scroll down to the "Account" Section and select "Settings"
  4. Toggle off the slider next to Direct Messages 



  • If you feel the need to stop Direct Messages from a specific user, you can block messages from individual users by following these steps:
    1. Tap the Message icon 
    2. Tap the Direct Message thread with the user on the left-hand side
    3. Tap the 3 dots to the right of the user's username in the top right corner 
    4. Select "Block"


  • If your customers sends you Direct Messages with support questions that you do not want to resolve yourself, please direct them to our Buyer Support team by filling out a form here.
  • Be respectful to other users, and adhere to our Community Guidelines when using the Direct Message feature.
