To comply with U.S. customs regulations, an AES Internal Transaction Number (ITN) is required before generating a label for shipments from U.S. sellers valued at more than $2,500 to international (excluding Canada), military, or U.S. territory destinations.
What is an ITN number? How do I get one?
An internal transaction number (ITN) is a 14-digit number that corresponds to an export transaction in the U.S. Customs Automated Export System (AES). It serves as proof that the seller has met their legal requirement to inform the U.S. government about the details of an export shipment.
A unique ITN number is required for each shipment from U.S. sellers valued at more than $2,500 to international (excluding Canada), military, or U.S. territory destinations.
An ITN can be generated by filing an Electronic Export Information (EEI) form through the U.S. Customs website. You will need to create an account the first time you use the site, however the process to generate an ITN shouldn’t take more than a few minutes per shipment after that point.
Step-by-step instructions for filling out the EEI form and generating an ITN can be found here.
How do I tell if a shipment needs an ITN number? How do I enter it?
An ITN number is required for any shipment over $2,500 to international (excluding Canada), military, or U.S. territory destinations.
Shipments requiring an ITN will be automatically marked as “Needs Review” in Seller Hub.
When you click into one of these shipments, you’ll see a field where you can enter the ITN number prior to generating a label. This number will automatically be added to the shipping label and will serve as proof that you have met the U.S. government’s requirement for export shipments.
You can also edit the ITN at any point prior to generating a label by clicking into a shipment.
What happens if I don’t file an ITN number?
An ITN number is now required for all shipments from U.S. sellers valued at more than $2,500 to international (excluding Canada), military, or U.S. territory destinations. This is required by the U.S. government for all shipments meeting this criteria.
