Apparel on Whatnot: Best Practices

Provide a Great Buying Experience

We strive to create positive buying and selling experiences on Whatnot, so it's essential for our apparel sellers to accurately represent their products, including any flaws or defects, as we’ve outlined in our Community Guidelines. This way, buyers know exactly what they're getting, leading to a smoother transaction experience for both buyers and sellers.

Clear communication about the condition of apparel items is crucial on Whatnot. Sellers should select the appropriate condition category when listing their items and verbally disclose the condition during live shows. Buyers are encouraged to review the listed apparel condition and note the seller's description before bidding or buying.

When buyers understand the condition of the products they’re buying, they’ll be happier with their purchases and more likely to shop with you again. Plus, it will decrease the time you spend on resolving inquiries and requests you get after the show.

Apparel Condition Categories

  • New with Tags: Brand new, unused, unworn, with original packaging and tags. No visible defects.
  • New with Defects: Brand new, unused, unworn, but may have minor cosmetic imperfections (color variations, scuffs, missing buttons, creases, etc.). May be missing original packaging or tags.
  • Pre-owned: Previously used or worn. May include vintage items and imperfections.
    • Excellent: No noticeable flaws
    • Good: Minor flaws or signs of wear
    • Fair: Obvious flaws or signs of wear (must be noted in the livestream)
    • Damaged: Clear damage (must be noted in the livestream)

Important Notes

  • Sellers must verbally state or indicate the item's condition in the listing title, description, or condition field.
  • Sellers must disclose all minor flaws for "New" items. For "Pre-owned" items, minor scratches or wear are assumed, and sellers don't need to disclose each one.
  • Major flaws must always be disclosed verbally or in the listing description, regardless of the condition. Potential major flaws include rips, stains, discoloration, pilling, misshapen items, missing/broken closures, and odors.
  • The listed size should be the actual size of the item (tag size, dimensions, etc.). Fit issues are not considered misrepresentations or condition issues.
  • It's recommended to verbally describe and show any damage on camera during live shows.
  • For Marketplace listings, the description and images should clearly show any significant flaws.

Consequences of Misrepresentation

Selling items in a misrepresented condition can result in penalties for sellers, including being charged for the items or even suspension/ban from Whatnot for repeated offenses.
