Create and sell variants of a product

Variants let you sell multiple options of the same product (like different sizes or colors of a specific sneaker model) in a single listing. Variants can be run as an Auction or sold as Buy It Now. Build them right in Whatnot, or create by connecting your Shopify account.

Before you start

  • You can add up to 3 options per product (like Size, Color, or Style)
  • You can have up to 2,048 variants total per product
  • Choose option values from our suggested list, or add your own custom values
  • They're available for Auction and Buy It Now listings (including Flash Sales)
  • Offers are not supported
  • You can define different quantities or prices for each variant
  • Buyers can purchase on any platform; sellers can create and manage listings on Web, Seller Hub, iOS, or Android

Tip: A T-shirt with 3 sizes and 2 colors creates 6 variants automatically, so you don't need to create each one by hand.

Create a variant

Buyers can purchase variants from your live shop, pinned listings, or Flash Sales.

On the app

  1. From your live show, open your shop and tap the + button
  2. Select Create Quality Listing
  3. Enter listing details like Title or Description
  4. Tap Manage Variants
  5. Add up to 3 options (like Size or Color), then enter the values for each, pick from our suggested list or type in your own
  6. Update the quantity of each variant based on your inventory
  7. (Optional) On Listing Details, select Variant Override to define a different price for a given variant
  8. Tap Publish

On web from Seller Hub

  1. Go to Inventory and click Create Product
  2. Enter listing details
  3. Add up to 3 options and enter your values, choose from suggested values or add your own
  4. Tap Publish

Add variants to an existing listing

Already listed a product without variants? You can turn it into a variant listing later:

  1. Go to Inventory and open the product
  2. Tap Manage Variants
  3. Add your options and values the same way you would for a new listing
  4. Save your changes

(Optional) Add photos for each variant

Give buyers a clearer look at each option. If you do not, we will show them the photos you added to the listing itself.

  1. From the listing editor, select a variant
  2. Upload photos just for that variant, or use Apply to all to use the same photos across every variant

Remove or update variants

  • To pause a variant without deleting it, set its quantity to 0

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How do I run auctions with variants?

Before you start the auction, we will ask you to confirm the variant within this listing you are running. The variant details will be shown to buyers as they bid

Can I use Flash Sales with variants?

Yes. Currently you can only run one specific variant as a Flash Sale at a time. 

Can I use variants with offers?

No. Variants don't currently support offers.

Can I add variants to a listing I already created?

Yes, head to the product in your Inventory and add options and values at any time.

Do I need to connect Shopify to use variants?

No. You can also build variants directly in Whatnot on Web, Seller Hub, iOS, or Android.
