We want all buyers on Whatnot to have clarity and transparency around the items they bid on and buy. When items are listed, sold, or given away in the Luxury Bags & Accessories Category specifically, there is an expectation that these items are luxury designer quality. When certain non-luxury items are sold in this category, it can lead to confusion.
To maintain trust with buyers in the Luxury Bags & Accessories category, we prohibit sellers from listing, selling or giving away certain non-luxury items in this category, and we have specific disclosure requirements when selling in this category.
This policy sets out:
- What is prohibited from being sold in Luxury Bags & Accessories
- Condition requirements in Luxury Bags & Accessories
What is prohibited from being sold in Luxury Bags & Accessories
Whatnot does not permit the following items to be listed, given away, or sold in the Luxury Bags & Accessories category:
- “VIP”, “gift with purchase”, or “GWP” items. These are items that brands may give away to loyal or VIP clientele for special occasions, or offer as free gifts with purchase.
- Upcycled branded items. These are handmade items that include branded component parts.
- Branded items or parts that have been removed from existing luxury items as standalone component parts (e.g., buttons and zipper pulls). These are often sold as “charms” or as jewelry if added to a chain.
These non-luxury branded items are easily mistaken for designer items when listed, sold or given away in the Luxury Bags & Accessories category.
As with all items on Whatnot, if Whatnot determines that any item is inauthentic, we will remove the item and take action against the relevant seller. We may require evidence of authenticity to sell these items.
Luxury Bags & Accessories Conditions Guidance
Every seller in the Luxury Bags & Accessories category is responsible for accurately describing the condition of the item they are selling, including calling out any flaws, defects, or damage.
When a seller does not accurately describe the condition of an item they sell, they may be billed back for the item purchased, and will receive more severe penalties if they continue to do so.
We have six states of condition for Luxury Bags & Accessories:
- New with tags: Item is brand new, never been used. No flaws or imperfections.
- Excellent: Item is pre-owned, and may have some minimal signs of use or wear that are not visibly noticeable.
- Very Good: Item is pre-owned, and may have more noticeable signs of gentle use, but overall in very good condition.
- Good: Item is pre-owned, and has moderate signs of regular use and wear.
- Fair: Item is pre-owned, and has noticeable signs of significant use and wear.
- Poor: Item is pre-owned and has severe signs of wear and use.
Sellers must verbally state the condition of the bag/accessory they’re selling or indicate the condition using the title, description, or condition field of the listing.
For any item that is not new, all flaws, imperfections or damage must be described verbally and shown on camera. If an item is being sold in the Marketplace, the description and images of the item must capture any material flaws.
Flaw disclosure: Regardless of condition, sellers must verbally state any major flaws or indicate them using the description field of the listing. Potential major flaws include:
- Scratches / Marks
- Tarnishing / Hardware Scratches
- Corner Wear / Rubbing
- Strap Wear
- Losing Shape / Misshapen
- Stains / Discoloration (Interior)
- Creasing
- Odors (must disclose if there is an odor)
Common locations of damage in luxury bags and accessories include, but are not limited to:
- Corners: Must show all the corners and the armpit. Show any wear, rubbing, or nicks.
- Hardware: Show any tarnishing, scratching, or mechanical issues, i.e., snap doesn’t close.
- Edges /Handles: Must show if there is any cracking.
