Buyers that believe they have been incorrectly charged sales tax can request a refund by submitting a request to our support team. You will be asked to provide documentation and certifications to help us confirm that sales tax was incorrectly charged.
For orders made after February 1st, 2024, Whatnot will not process sales tax refund requests made more than 30 days after an order is received. Further, refund requests must be made individually for each order, will we not be able to process bulk refund requests.
If you believe you were incorrectly charged sales tax and did not submit a request to support within 30 days, you may be able to apply for a refund directly from your state tax authority. General information as to how to request a refund from each state can be found below.
Note: This policy does not apply to transactions made prior to the submission of a sales tax exemption for which the correct tax treatment has been applied. See here for more information on applying for a sales tax exemption.
Alabama
To obtain a refund of Alabama sales tax, Buyers must file Form ST-6, Petition for Refund of Taxes Paid to Seller, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) must be enclosed with Form ST-6. Whatnot's Alabama Seller's Account Number is SSU-R011821482 and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. Whatnot's FEIN is 84-3414892. Instructions detailing where to send the completed form and the supporting documents can be found on Form ST-6 at the bottom of page 2.
Arizona
Arizona Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
Arkansas
To obtain a refund of Arkansas sales tax, Buyers must file Form 2004-6, Arkansas Claim for Refund, directly with the State. Sections 1, 2, and 3 of Form 2004-6 must be completed, and copies of all applicable order receipts must be enclosed in chronological order. Buyers must first submit a request to Whatnot support to complete Section 2, Column 12 and Section 3 of Form 2004-6. Instructions for the refund claim are detailed on Form 2004-6, page 1. California
California Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
Colorado
To obtain a refund for Colorado sales tax, Buyers must file Form DR 0137B, Claim for Refund of Tax Paid to Vendors, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) and that the Buyers attempted to obtain a sales tax refund from Whatnot must be enclosed with Form DR 0137B. Whatnot's Colorado Sales Tax Account Number is 94871803-003-SLS and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. Whatnot's FEIN is 84-3414892. Instructions for the refund claim are detailed on Form DR 0137B on page 1 and the required documentation is at the top of page 2. Information on where to mail the forms and additional documentation can be found on Form DR 0137B at the top of pages 4 and 5.
Connecticut
To obtain a refund of Connecticut sales tax, Buyers must file Form AU-524, Assignment of Retailer's Rights for Refund, directly with the State. Buyers must first submit a request to Whatnot to complete the Declaration by Retailer section of Form AU-524. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) must be enclosed with Form AU-524. Whatnot's Connecticut Sales Tax ID Number is 084283951-001 and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. The form and supporting documents need to be mailed to the address on the top of Form AU-524. District of Columbia
To obtain a refund of District of Columbia sales tax, Buyers must file Form FP-331, Claim for Refund, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) must be enclosed with Form FP-331. Instructions for the refund claim and the address to send the completed form can be found on Form FP-331 on page 2.
Florida
To obtain a refund of Florida sales tax, Buyers must file Form DR-26S, Application for Refund - Sales and Use Tax, and Form DR-26A, Assignment of Rights to Refund of Tax, directly with the State. Whatnot’s Florida Sales Tax Certificate Number is 78-8018852531-6 and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. Whatnot’s FEIN is 84-3414892. Alternatively, in lieu of filling out Form-26S, the required information may be submitted to the State via Florida Revenue. Buyers must first submit a request to Whatnot to complete Section 3 of Form DR-26A, Assignment of Rights to Refund of Tax. Georgia
Georgia Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order. Refund requests after 30 days will only be considered for high value orders or exceptional circumstances. Please contact Whatnot for further assistance.
Hawaii
Hawaii Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
Idaho
To obtain a refund of Idaho sales tax, Buyers must file Form TCR EFO00127, Sales Tax Refund Claim. Supporting documentation proving that the Buyers attempted to obtain a sales tax refund from Whatnot must be included. Instructions for the refund claim and the address to send the completed form can be found on Form TCR EFO00127 on page 2.
Illinois
Illinois Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
Indiana
To obtain a refund of Indiana sales tax, Buyers must file a refund claim directly with the State via the InTime online portal. On the online portal, click on “Submit a refund request on purchases” under the “Refund for tax on purchases” category.
Iowa
To obtain a refund for Iowa sales tax, Buyers must file Form IA 843, Refund Return, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) must be enclosed with Form IA 843. Instructions for the refund claim and the address to send the completed form can be found on Form IA 843 at the top of page 1.
Kansas
To obtain a refund of Kansas sales tax, Buyers must file Form ST-21, Sales and Use Tax Refund Application, directly with the State. The refund claim must exceed $50. Buyers must first submit a request for Whatnot to complete Part E of Form ST-21. Instructions on completing Form ST-21 and where to send the completed form with the supporting documentation can be found in Pub KS-1220.
Kentucky
Kentucky Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
Louisiana
To obtain a refund of Louisiana sales tax, Buyers must file Form R-20127, Claim for Refund of Overpayment, directly with the State. Alternatively, a written refund claim request with substantially the same information as Form R-20127 can be submitted. Refund requests of $25,000 or more must be submitted electronically. Instructions on where to send the completed form and the supporting documentation can be found on Form R-20127 at the top of page 1.
Maine
To obtain a refund of Maine sales tax, Buyers must file Form APP-153, Application for Refund of Sales or Use Tax, directly with the State. A cover letter with an explanation detailing the reason for the refund claim and supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) must be enclosed with Form APP-153. Instructions on where to send the completed form, the cover letter, and any other pertinent information can be found on Form APP-153 at the bottom of page 3.
Maryland
To obtain a refund of Maryland sales tax, Buyers must file Form SUT205, Sales and Use Tax Refund Application, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) must be enclosed with Form SUT205. Instructions on where to send the completed form and the supporting documentation can be found on the bottom of Form SUT205.
Massachusetts
Massachusetts Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order. Refund requests made after 30 days will only be considered for high value orders or exceptional circumstances. Please contact Whatnot for further assistance.
Michigan
To obtain a refund of Michigan sales tax, Buyers must file Form 5633, Purchaser Refund Request for Sales and Use Tax Exemption, directly with the State. Buyers must submit this form to Whatnot for Whatnot's signature stating it will not seek a refund for this same tax. Whatnot’s FEIN is 84-3414892 and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. Page 2 of Form 5633 provides instructions and required documentation to be submitted along with the form. The completed form and supporting documents need to be mailed to the address on Form 5633 on the top of page 1.
Minnesota
To obtain a refund of Minnesota sales tax, Buyers must file Form ST11, Sales and Use Tax Refund Request, directly with the State. Buyers must be registered for sales and use tax in Minnesota, and the refund claim must exceed $500. Instructions on where to send the completed form and the supporting documentation can be found on Form ST11 at the bottom of page 1. Pages 2 and 3 provide instructions for the Form ST11 and the sample worksheet to be submitted.
Mississippi
Mississippi Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
Missouri
To obtain a refund of Missouri sales tax, Buyers must file Form 472P, Purchaser's Claim Under Section 144.190.4 for Sales or Use Tax Refund, and Form 5433, Assignment of Rights From the Seller to Purchaser For Refund Under Section 144.190.4(1) directly with the State. Buyers must first submit a request for Whatnot to provide the Buyers with a notarized Form 5433. Whatnot's Missouri Seller's Tax ID Number is 26826763 and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. Whatnot's FEIN is 84-3414892. Instructions detailing where to send the completed forms and supporting documents can be found on Form 472P at the bottom of page 2.
Nebraska
To obtain a refund of Nebraska sales tax, Buyers must file Form 7, Claim for Overpayment of Sales and Use Tax, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) must be enclosed with Form 7. Whatnot's Nebraska ID number is S00209441 and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. Instructions detailing where to send the completed form and supporting documents can be found on Form 7 at the bottom of page 1 and page 2 provides instructions for Form 7.
Nevada
To obtain a refund of Nevada sales tax, Buyers must file a written refund claim request directly with the State. The refund claim request must include (1) the refund amount, (2) an explanation detailing the reason for the refund claim, (3) all supporting documentation used to determine a refund is due, and (4) proof that the Buyers attempted to obtain a tax refund from Whatnot. Please note, the refund claim approval process takes approximately two years in Nevada. Refund requests and the supporting documentation need to be sent to nevadaolt@tax.state.nv.us or mailed to Department of Taxation, 3850 Arrowhead Dr., 2nd Floor, Carson City NV 89706, which can be found on the State's website.
New Jersey
To obtain a refund of New Jersey sales tax, Buyers must file Form A-3730, Claim For Refund, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) must be enclosed with Form A-3730. Instructions for Form A-3730 and the address to send the completed form can be found on Form A-3730 on page 2.
New Mexico
New Mexico Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
New York
To obtain a refund of New York sales tax, Buyers must file Form AU-11, Application for Credit or Refund of Sales or Use Tax, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) and an explanation detailing the reason for the refund claim must be enclosed with Form AU-11. Instructions detailing where to send the completed form and supporting documents can be found in the Instructions for Form AU-11-I.
North Carolina
North Carolina Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
North Dakota
North Dakota Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
Ohio
To obtain a refund of Ohio sales tax, Buyers must file Form ST AR, Sales/Use Tax Application for Refund, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) and an explanation detailing the reason for the refund claim must be enclosed with Form ST AR. Whatnot’s sales/use tax vendor license number is S00209441 and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. Instructions detailing where to send the completed form and supporting documents can be found on Form ST AR on page 2. For information on the documents that must be supplied, refer to Refund Checklists (STAR C) in the tax forms section.
Oklahoma
To obtain a refund of Oklahoma sales tax, Buyers must file Form 13-9, Application of Credit or Refund of State and Local Sales or Use Tax, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) and an explanation detailing the reason for the refund claim must be enclosed with Form 13-9. Also, buyers must also complete Form ARDD-100, Refund Direct Deposit Form.
Form 13-9 and the supporting documents need to be mailed to Oklahoma Tax Commission, Oklahoma City, OK 73194. The street address is not required for the Oklahoma Tax Commission. Form ARDD-100 needs to be mailed to the address at the bottom of the form. Please note these are 2 different addresses. Instructions for the Form 13-9 for buyers who do not hold Oklahoma sales tax permits are on Form 13-9, page 2, #1.
If the tax amount exceeds $10,000, Buyers must include proof that the Buyers attempted to obtain a tax refund from Whatnot.
Pennsylvania
To obtain a refund of Pennsylvania sales tax, Buyers must file Form REV-65, Board of Appeals Petition Form, and Form REV-39, Sales & Use Tax Appeal Schedule, directly with the State. Form REV-39 can be downloaded from the “Other Forms” list. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot (e.g., order receipt, bank statements, etc.) and an explanation detailing the reason for the refund claim must be enclosed with Form REV-65. Instructions for Form REV-65 and the address to send the completed form can be found on Form REV-65 on page 3.
Rhode Island
To obtain a refund of Rhode Island sales tax, Buyers must file Form Claim for Refund Sales or Use Tax directly with the State. Instructions detailing where to send the completed forms can be found on Form Claim for Refund Sales or Use Tax at the top of page 1.
South Carolina
To obtain a refund of South Carolina sales tax, Buyers must file Form ST-14, Sales & Use Tax Refund Claim, and Form ST-16, Assignment of Rights To A Sales Tax Refund, directly with the State. Buyers must first submit a request for Whatnot to provide the Buyers with a completed Form ST-16. Instructions for Form ST-14 and the address to send the completed form can be found on Form ST-14 on the bottom of page 1 and on page 2.
South Dakota
South Dakota Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
Tennessee
To obtain a refund of Tennessee sales tax, the claim must exceed $2,500, and Buyers must file Form RV-F1403301, Claim for Credit or Refund of Sales or Use Tax, directly with the State. Proof that Buyer’s requested a refund from Whatnot on at least two separate occasions must be enclosed with Form RV-F1403301. The refund requests submitted to Whatnot must be made at least 30 days apart. Buyers must submit the first refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
When making the second request for a refund, Buyers should include a request for Whatnot to provide the Buyers with a completed Form RV-F700001, Sales and Use Tax Buyers Refund Dealer Attestation Form. Instructions for Form RV-F1403301 and the address to send the completed form can be found on Form RV-F1403301 at the top of page 1 and on page 2.
Texas
To obtain a refund of Texas sales tax, Buyers must file Form 00-957, Texas Claim For Refund, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot, such as order receipts and bank statements, must be enclosed with Form 00-957. If the Buyer does not hold a Texas sales and use tax permit, the buyer should request Whatnot to provide a completed Form 00-985, Assignment of Right to Refund, before filing the claim. Whatnot’s Texas Taxpayer Number is 32079386887 and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. Instructions for Form 00-957 and the address to send the completed form can be found on Form 00-957 on the bottom of the page.
Utah
To obtain a refund of Utah sales tax, Buyers must file Form TC-62PR, Application for Refund of Utah Sales and Use Tax, directly with the State. Supporting documentation, such as order receipts and bank statements, must be enclosed with Form TC-62PR. Instructions for Form TC-62PR and the address to send the completed form can be found on Form TC-62PR on the bottom of page 2.
Vermont
To obtain a refund of Vermont sales tax, Buyers must file Form REF-620, Application for Refund of Vermont Sales and Use Tax, directly with the State. Supporting documentation proving that the tax was paid to Whatnot must be enclosed with Form REF-620. Instructions detailing where to send the completed form and supporting documents can be found on Form REF-620 at the top of the page.
Virginia
To obtain a refund of Virginia sales tax, Buyers must file three forms directly with the State which are located in the Refund Claim Forms packet: (1) Refund Claimant Return, (2) Vendor Certification, and (3) Refund Request Spreadsheet. Buyers should first request Whatnot to provide a completed Vendor Certification Form. Whatnot’s Virginia ID # is 12-843414892F-001 and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. Completed forms with the support documents must be emailed to the Refund Coordinator at refund.coordinator@tax.virginia.gov. Please refer to the "Retail Sales and Use Tax Refund Claim Procedures” on page 15 of the Refund Claim Forms packet for instructions and where to send the completed Refund Claims Forms packet.
Washington
To obtain a refund of Washington sales tax, Buyers must file Form REV 41 0105e, Application for Refund and Credit, and Form REV 41 0106, Seller's Declaration, directly with the State. Buyers should first request Whatnot to provide a completed Form REV 41 0106. Whatnot’s Seller’s Account ID is S00209441 and the legal name is Whatnot Inc. Instructions for both forms can be found on page 2 of the forms. The address for where to send the forms are on page 1 of both forms.
West Virginia
To obtain a refund of West Virginia sales tax, Buyers must file Form CST-240, Claim for Refund or Credit of Sales Tax Paid to a Vendor/Reseller, and Form CST AF-1, Affidavit For An Individual Filing A Claim Of Refund For Consumers Sales and Service Tax or Use Tax, directly with the State. If the claim concerns 25 or more orders, the Buyers must submit a CD or other portable electronic media containing a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet with the invoice information. Whatnot’s legal name is Whatnot Inc. Instructions for Form CST-240 and the address to send the completed form can be found on Form CST-240 Instructions on page 2.
Wisconsin
Buyers are only able to apply for a refund in limited circumstances, including if the refund claim exceeds $50. To claim a refund from the state, Buyers must file Form BCR S-220, Buyer's Claim For Refund of Wisconsin State, County and Stadium Sales Taxes, directly with the State. Instructions for Form BCR S-220 and the address to send the completed form and supporting documents can be found on Form BCR S-220.
Wyoming
Wyoming Buyers cannot claim a refund for overpaid sales tax directly from the State. Buyers must submit a refund request to Whatnot within 30 days of their order.
