Sales Tax Exemptions

Depending on your state and/or local jurisdiction, you may be required to pay sales tax on your Whatnot purchases. When you buy an item on Whatnot, the required taxes may vary depending on the item’s price, characterization, and your location.

Within the United States, some states allow Buyers to receive a sales tax exemption which allows them to make certain purchases tax-free. You as the Buyer are responsible for ensuring you are eligible for the exemption in the state you are claiming the exemption from.

If you are eligible for a sales tax exemption, we will need the following information: 

  • Username and email address associated with your Whatnot account
  • A government-issued photo ID
  • A fully completed sales tax exemption certificate
    • The sales tax exemption certificate can vary depending on your state. Please see the list below and provide the required documentation.
    • Make sure you fill out your information as the purchaser, our information as the seller, the reason for the exemption, and sign and date.
    • Certificates may require your business permit/license number. These go by different names, such as retail permit/license, sales tax permit/license, seller's permit, vendor’s license, and certificate of authority/registration.

Please note that incorrect or incomplete documentation will result in processing delays. You will only receive a sales tax exemption after your application is received and approved by Whatnot. Once approved, we will contact you via email. We cannot retroactively apply a sales tax exemption to any of your purchases on Whatnot that occur prior to approval. Approval will be valid for one year, at which point you will need to resubmit for approval.
